FBI Kills Fugitive Roy McGrath After Three-Week Manhunt

Roy McGrath, 53, the ex-chief of staff to former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, was shot and killed by the FBI at the end of a three-week manhunt. According to the FBI, he was found near Knoxville, TN. McGrath died at a nearby hospital after the FBI encounter. The former chief of staff was considered a fugitive by U.S. Marshals after he failed to appear at his federal fraud trial in Baltimore on March 13th, 2023. The U.S. Marshals Service and FBI offered a $20,000 reward for information that led to McGrath's arrest. Before his death, McGrath faced a maximum of 100 years in federal prison on fraud charges – including falsified documents of payments approved by Governor Hogan and stealing more than $275,000 from the Maryland State Government. Over the weekend, a slew of destructive tornadoes ripped through the American South and Midwest, leaving more than 32 people dead and causing billions of dollars in damages to property. Many believe the massive storms are a result of weather patterns that caused a clash between cold and warm fronts from the north and south to converge over the center of the country. Twitter removed The New York Times’ verified checkmark after the company refused to pay for Musk’s new Twitter Blue subscription. Many other previously verified accounts are bracing for the loss of the distinguishable blue checkmark, which helps identify high-profile accounts from imposters. An anonymous Twitter account brought the Times’ refusal to pay for a blue checkmark to Musk’s attention early Sunday morning, leading the billionaire to tweet, “ok, we’ll take it off then.” Musk went on to Tweet, “their propaganda isn’t even interesting” and “their feed is the Twitter equivalent of diarrhea” about the New York Times. The media platform began removing checkmarks on Saturday for those who will not pay. Chinese Spy Balloon Eavesdropped; Gathered U.S. Intelligence

Despite efforts to block it, the Chinese spy balloon was able to gather intelligence from several sensitive American military sites before it was shot down off the Carolina coast. China was able to control the balloon’s passage over several military sites, at times flying in “figure eights,” transmitting information back to Beijing in real time. Officials said the intelligence mainly was from electronic signals picked up from weapons systems or included communications from base personnel. China said the balloon was an unmanned civilian that strayed off course. Additionally, the balloon had a self-destruct mechanism that China could activate remotely. It is unclear if it wasn’t triggered because the machine malfunctioned or because China decided not to. Officials have tried to reconstruct the balloon from the debris recovered. Read More
